Complete Guide: Standee and Tabletop Figure Generator for Laser Cutting
This Standee Generator is the ultimate tool for automatically designing characters, trophies, or decorations with bases. Forget about manually tracing outlines in Illustrator or CorelDraw and manually calculating slot dimensions; upload your image and get an SVG file ready to send to your laser machine.
How to use the Standee Generator?
- Upload your image: We recommend using PNG images with transparent backgrounds so the edge detector works perfectly.
- Adjust the B/W Threshold: If your image has very light colors, play with the Black and White threshold until the silhouette is solid and has no unwanted gaps.
- Configure the Tab (Encastre): This is the most important step. Measure the actual thickness of your material with digital calipers and enter it in "Material Thickness".
- Add the Kerf: Enter your laser machine's cutting compensation (kerf) to ensure the figure press-fits securely into its oval base.
- Download and Cut: Export the SVG file, open it in LightBurn, RDWorks, or LaserGRBL, assign your cutting and engraving layers, and you're good to go.
Materials: Acrylic vs. MDF
When making standees, the material you choose will change how you should configure this generator:
- Acrylic (Clear or colored): This is the king of materials for anime or illustration standees. Because acrylic does not compress at all, your Kerf and Thickness settings must be mathematically exact, otherwise, the base will crack when trying to fit the figure.
- MDF or Wood: Ideal for rustic decorations, centerpieces, or wedding favors. MDF has a slight tolerance and flexibility, so tabs usually fit more easily even if the Kerf varies by a couple of hundredths of a millimeter.
The Secret to a Perfect Fit: The Caliper
Never trust your material manufacturer's label. Acrylic sold as "3mm" almost always measures between 2.7mm and 2.9mm due to the manufacturing process (cast or extruded).
If you input "3.0" in the generator but your material measures 2.8mm, your standee will be loose and fall over sideways. Measure your material before generating the file.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This tool works by tracing contrast. If you upload a photo with a landscape background, the generator will try to trace the landscape. You must use software to remove the background first, or use our built-in AI tool ("Get AI Prompt" button) to generate clean images with a white or transparent background.
This happens when there are transparent or white pixels inside your character. To fix this, you can go to "Advanced Settings" and increase the "Hull Gap" value, or activate the "No Background" option to force a continuous outer silhouette.
Sometimes, vectors or AI-generated images have very fine lines that the laser might burn completely away, or that would barely be noticed in the final engraving. This option slightly expands the internal strokes so the engraving stands out much more on the finished piece.
This tool is optimized for generating the cutting outline (vectors) and preparing "comic" or "cel-shading" style graphics for vector engraving. If you want to engrave a realistic photograph (grayscale or dither), we recommend using the generator only to create the outline and base, and processing your photo directly in LightBurn using Jarvis or Stucki mode.
